How I lost 16kgs in one week!

David Richards

It might sound unbelievable, but I swear to you that back in the year 2000 I lost 16kg in one week.  Do you want to know how to achieve such rapid weight loss results in the shortest time possible with the least amount of effort?  Of course you do, that's what everybody wants. ;)

I still remember it like it was just yesterday... I went from a 6"4, 103kg gym junkie to 87kg in 7 days. Unfortunately this was not on purpose. :( It was due to a burst appendix that saw me rushed to hospital to undergo emergency surgery where I almost died. After spending 7 days lying in a hospital bed unable to eat, barely able to move and living on a hospital drip for an entire week I experienced significant muscle atrophy, weight loss and reduced immunity. For the first time in my life I had no energy and felt frail, vulnerable, weak and scared.

After about 3-4 weeks recovery I dragged myself back to the gym and was shocked about how my posture had changed. Shoulders rolled forward, arched back, I had no muscle, no strength, no energy and a serious lack of motivation. I picked up a pair of 2kg dumbells and was able to curl them to my shoulders for 3-4 times before my shoulders started to lift, buckle and my biceps just stopped working. I felt embarrassed, self conscious and intimidated by all of the fit people surrounding me, so I left the gym.

After another 2 weeks I made the decision that I had to deal with my insecurities, and start exercising again in order to get back my self confidence, posture, strength and energy. I knew it was going to be difficult but after realising just how big my "Why" was to me I knew that failure was not an option and that I would stick to it regardless of how long it was going to take.  And I did!

This story still makes me cringe when I think about it, is nothing to brag about and by no means makes me special compared to anybody else. Everybody has their own personal experience and I know there are so many people that have had a much tougher journey than mine. For me personally, this "Why" moment that I had in the year 2000 was big enough that it still motivates me to train consistently every week to this day.

I am not concerned with trying to keep up with other people's expectations, goals or physiques. My competition is myself. I know that if I can improve on my own abilities, performances and achievements every year in business, life and exercise and inspire others to do the same then I feel pretty damn good about life and myself.  That's "Why" I train!

When you have found your own personal motivation or "Why", there is nothing that can stop you.  You will find success!

And just for the record, I would not recommend anybody trying to lose 16kg in one week!

Focus on fat loss and building a positive relationship with food! Not weight loss and unrealistic expectations!
